The Summer Box Office Challenge is now open, as is Movieline and Pick 5. I apologize for the lack of activity on the site this year, I was blessed with a son this winter and he has consumed most of my free time.

http://ez1productions.com/challenge/
http://ez1productions.com/movieline/
http://ez1productions.com/pick5/

Please help spread the word about the games.
Thanks for playing and welcome back,
EZ

I am incredibly torn on Popstar.

I have a feeling it is either going to be a big hit or a massive flop.

I can't tell.

At it's current price, I don't think a massive flop is really possible.

I dunno. Just ask Zac Efron and his music-biz flick from last year, which had THE WORST OPENING WEEKEND OF ALL-TIME.

Having said that, I don't think POPSTAR will suffer a similar fate.

Shouldn't Hollywood be in mild panic mode right now? Non-serial sequels (that is, sequels that aren't part of a larger 'universe') are clearly not on moviegoers's dinner menu this summer.

I need someone to make a convincing case for how/why TMNT 2 is cracking 30M.

Kids still love the Turtles.  The marketing has been extensive.  The addition of Casey Jones, Kraang, Bebop and Rocksteady with have fans ready for another turn.  The lack of a recent breakout in the market should allow TMNT 2 enough room to cross 40M, let alone 30M.

I think what you've described is precisely what the studio thought too and why the film was made. But I'm uncertain that the law of diminishing returns will save this one from a +50% fall from the first film.

It's interesting to see that even in the early '90s, the second one had a 20% OW drop. That was in 1991, at the height of the VHS craze where kids/families found films on video and branding and tie-ins started to become a thing. It strikes me that this should have meant a significant OW boost for the turtles and certainly not a drop.

I think the turtles crew is now a cult and though the first film posted a big number, that was the swell of nostalgia talking. Going back to the well for more CGI turtle adventures...that's not a 100M domestic proposition.

Thing is, though, this one looks like so much more fun than the first one.

I still haven't watched the first one yet, but I kinda want to see this one, and I hope they are at least somewhat rewarded for learning from their mistakes.

Well, TMNT 2 had showings starting at 5PM across the country today. Paramount is clearly desperate to get that weekend number above 30M.

Also, at what point can everybody just admit movies open on Thursday now? How can an entire late afternoon/evening on Thursday still count as "weekend box office." Laughable.

Thank you! I've been asking the same damn question. It's stupid.
