So... was Pets actually supposed to go down 2m?

Yup. I probably could have taken the Toy Story comment off, but Yup.

Pets was the most frustrating title I can remember doing price changes for. Ever since I saw the trailer and the reaction it got every time I saw it, I thought it was going to kill at the box office. I started it off high and no one was buying it, dropped it almost 20 million and ownership still sucked until the week of its release.

"Name the last animated movie geared only at adults."

Anomolisa came out on 12/30/15.

Not a wide release so difficult comparison, 3.8m total - was nominated for the Oscar though.

I wonder if there are a lot of parents out there who are dumb enough to take their kids to it because "it's animated".

I couldn't think of a comparison.

The obvious comparison is SOUTH PARK, which opened to 11.3M in June 1999.

So...any prediction over 15M is truly unprecedented. Not saying it's impossible, but the odds aren't good.

I guess you could count that Team America movie too.

Yeah, they would've been my other suggestions but also, so long ago that comparisons aren't really valid. Aqua Teen Hunger Force even dropped on under 1000 screens (less than a decade ago) but that was also only playing to the fan base. Ted is probably closer to comparison.

TED is a good one. I still don't think a wholly animated R-rated feature can break into the 20M. In fact, I won't be surprised if this goes the way of POPSTAR. Not to that degree, perhaps, but will anyone be surprised if this opens under 10M? The social media figures are good, but these are likely enthusiasts intent upon seeing it for free online.

Basically, I'm not sure how many people could be persuaded on this one if they aren't already on board with the idea. Like, even if reviews are hailing it a masterpiece, the majority of folks are still gonna be like "I'm not going to see a raunchy movie about animated talking food."
