Tough decisions

This weekend marks the toughest decisions of the game so far. Really wishing I hadn't kept Pirates early on so I could get Dm3 and Spidey. Now which one to keep?!!

Also Baby driver's price has dropped so much it looks tempting but losing first two days and lots of competition in next two weeks. Had forgotten how tricky this game is!!

I agree Baby Driver's dropped to a tempting price.  What I'm worried about is the Wednesday open, because discount Tuesday is sucking up more and more of the weekend grosses, especially in summer.  Will Wright's fanbase and opening previews frontload it to Tuesday night?  I just don't know.  As for Despicable Me and Spidey, I'm not sure I'll be keeping either at their prices.  I'm not feeling huge hype for either considering their franchises, and there's lots of competition coming up.  Tough decisions indeed.

So did you keep Baby Driver, Sol?  I snatched it up at the last minute.  Just curious if we'll still be tied this weekend!

I decided against baby driver in the end. Think the combo of loss of first two days and the good reviews for competition like Spidey and Apes makes me think it might struggle to reach 2.0 ROI...

I did keep it.  Ultimately, my hope is that WOM will carry it as strong counter-programming to the big movies opening the next few weeks.  It's also got a surprisingly nice theater count.

I hung onto baby driver, because in spite of knowing its poor strategy, I like to fill out my portfolio with movies I personally want to see.

Sol, are you suggesting that Discount Tuesday is a nationwide thing?

I don't know if all chains do it the same way, but it can't be just Marcus (80 some theaters) because that wouldn't result in the large box office increases seen on Tuesdays in the national numbers.

AMC (and Carmike, who they bought out) has discount Tuesdays.

How did I miss that this was a 5-day weekend?

Suddenly DM3 is looking darn good.

I kept it. I think it'll have reasonable holds as no direct competition. Spidey reviews are good, but leave me cold as it is just another damn marvel movie. Apes looks great but will struggle to break out past its predecessors, and Dunkirk is an unknown quantity. Had too many funds left for too much uncertainty so have gone with the Minions...

Lol.  Roll Eyes

I decided to pass on Despicable Me 3 and The House.  Despicable Me 3 was a tough choice, but by passing it leaves more options open for the second half of the game.  The House had no buzz.

Showdown was tough too.  I hated going against Wonder Woman, but in the end I just couldn't see it catching up and passing Transformers 5 in just one week.

Looks like you made all the right calls! After a good start to the game, keeping DM3 and dropping Baby Driver at last minute look to have killed me.  Embarrassed

This week I did.  But keeping Cars 3 might kill me.

Nut Job 2 (weak tracking, weak reviews, great theater count, in a market where kids movies keep underperforming)
vs.
Logan Lucky (good reviews, good cast, and gets a holiday third weekend, but an unknown theater count from a studio that has never released a movie in more than 2000 theaters and whose highest grossing movie made less than 20M total.  AND it's going up against a movie targeting the same demo.)

Tough call.
